Galton Revisited
2009 – (ongoing)
Francis Galton Archive and Collection, UCL, London
Research
A research and development project exploring the Francis Galton Archives and Collection. An ongoing body of work exploring the similarities in process between my work and Galton’s. While Galton was seeking definitive quantifiable answers, my work is more rooted in play, chance and asking questions. There is, however, a shared interest in process and experimentation and at times uncanny similarities in method and aesthetic.
Amongst other things there are dice made by both Galton and I. My dice show fragments of many similar images of the much photographed actress Zena Dare. The idea is that by rolling the dice, random and varying images of Zena Dare will be created. The audience are invited to construct their own narratives around these new images, contemplating the subject’s life. Galton’s dice, rather less personally were developed in his studies of statistics, to draw a series of values at random to suit various statistical purposes.
